Whole House Refurbishment Architect
Established in 2009 Atelierdb we have extensive knowledge on how to improve and renovate period properties.
Atelierdb inform homeowners on the importance of having correct detailing and construction principles to best protect the fabric of the building as well as the internal environment.
Typically period properties are constructed with solid masonry walls which soak up moisture externally from the ground or when it rains. Internally a family generates more than 100 pints of moisture within a week. If this moisture is not addressed then problems can arise with condensation. This may not be immediately aparent, but with time this can lead to mould growth and rotting to timbers and materials generally. As energy loss prevention becomes ever more critical it is not simply the case that installing more and more insulation and triple glazing will address the issue. Ventilation is key and Atelierdb are experienced in designing and detailing refurbishments to not only become more energy efficient but also retain good ventilation.
When making buildings air-tight it is necessary to consider using Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems. Atelierdb are experienced in achieving air tightness in conjunction with these ventilation systems. Coordinating these systems needs careful design and implementation by a Builder who passionately believes in the end goal – without this there is a high chance of failure. The reality of imposing these new solutions into period properties comes with cost and compromise, but the benefits far outweigh in terms of energy savings and well-being of the resulting internal spaces.

The internet offers limitless advice and views on how best to improve the thermal performance of historic properties. Understanding which advice is right is another matter and there remains conflicting information from some of the major suppliers of insulation. Atelierdb has undertaken in depth research into the correct solutions to know which solutions best suite refurbishment projects.
